Baconface and the Bootlicker
Suprise Suprise as Cilla would say!
Sir Alex ‘Baconface’ Ferguson and Gary ‘Bootlicker’ ‘moron’ Neville are looking down the wrong end of a Carling cup defeat!
With every ounce of my soul i hope we beat Stretford Town on the return leg at the thetre of debt (too many puns?).
I am very much a realist, and until the 98 minutes, not including injury time are up, i will be bolted firmly to my seat, mouth shut and no fingernails.
City are lucky to be going into the second leg with an advantage. The game was full of passion, but not necessarily full of skill and quality play. At times both teams were poor, however it was great to see our defence hold out for the last 10 minutes which is suprising when it comes to the ‘usual’ City.
Mancini has done a good job of getting the defence to work as one unit, knowing where each other is at all times (well mostly anyway). The team looks more solid together as well.
The second leg will be a big test with nerves running through to the very heart of all the fans, but i believe we CAN do it!

Dunne deal
Richard Dunne is off to Villa, and i’ll be one of the many City fans who will cheer him when he visits us. He has been an outstanding player for us for so many seasons and i will be sad to see him go, but in all fairness, he is now 29 and it was probably the right time to sell him rather than see him lose form over the next couple of seasons at Eastlands. I think Villa are a tea who will be fighting City for a top 6 place this season so its more of a sideways step for Dunne and i’m sure the new challenge for him will be exciting, and i believe he will do well for them.
He is probably the end of an era really as he’s been with us so long and was there through the bad times through to now. He set up a formidable partnership with Sylvain Distin for years and was a rock at the centre of defence, his passion for the game was evident and it showed in him receiving fans player of the year 3 years running.
The thing i am most pleased about is City’s attitude in him leaving. next year would have been his testimonial year and a big payday for him (around £6m). City have decided to give him a golden handshake as a thankyou for his service to the club, estimated to be in the £6m area. I think it shows that we value our players that have been with the club for a long time just as much as we value all the newcomers.
Richard Dunne can leave knowing that he will be remembered for all he did for City over the years.
Thanks Dunney

We beat Barcelona why can’t you?!
The title says it all. Stretford end can’t beat Barcelona (not even Burnley!), yet Man City produce a great defensive display and counter attacking style to bring Mark Hughes first trophy as Manager back to Eastlands!
Yes, it wasn’t the Champions league final and you could argue that Barcelona weren’t fielding their strongest team, but take into account the following…
Barcelona didn’t field a weak side. The Joan Gamper Trophy has been fought for for 43 years of which Barcelona have won it 33 times. they take this game seriously every year as do the fans – they weren’t too pleased with the loss!
City fielded what could have been seen as a weaker team than they could have – no adebayor, robinho, kompany, de jong.
I was seriously impressed with our defending. Barcelona did have more possession and more chances, yet our defenders who came in for some slack last year stood firm. Our counter attacking and passing was mostly sharp and showed how far we have come in a season (with a little help from the £200m we’ve spent).
The thing that impressed me most was our homegrown talent and youngsters that mark Hughes gave a chance to. Nedum Onuoha was as always very good, i’m so glad he has signed a 5 year deal to stay at City, he is a very quick and accurate defender. He doesn’t do shoulder barging, just perfectly timed challenges. Stephen Ireland was all over the pitch as usual and Kelvin Etuhu showed a lot of promise in the 20 minutes he was on the pitch. he’s come on leaps and bouds in the past 2 seasons.
The player i was most impressed with was Vladimir Weiss, 19 year old slovakian who in my onpinion was the best City player on the pitch. He was committed to every challenge and was running just as fast at the end as he was at the start. I’ve not seen him before but see a big future for him, hopefully at City.
It gives me confidence that Hughes isn’t just going to go with big name players like Sven, but he’ll play the people who deserve to play, regardless of age or experience. lets hope so anyway.
If we play as well as we did tonight, against a team that most premiership teams would struggle to even get a point, then i can be optimistic about our chances of a top 6 finish.

Two’s Kompany…
News coming from the tabloids is that Barca are lining up a possible £10m bid for Vincent Kompany should they fail in their bid to sign Jonny Evans from Stretford Town. Let me say that i would hate it to see Kompany go after just one season. he is a quality player who is able to play as a defensive midfielder and centre-back. he is the perfect replacement for the ageing Richard Dunne and i will be sorely disappointed if he goes. Mark Hughes does have his head switched on though, so hopefully we’ll have Vincent with us for a few years yet.

It’s all happening-not long left!
Not long til the new season and i’m very excited! It’s going to be lots of fun and i think there will be a few upsets this term. I was well pleased with last year in the way of the fight at the bottom – with the bottom half of the table being separated by just a few points right up until the end. it was also good to see 2 of the teams who came up, stay up and makes me think that the premiership is no longer going to be viewed an elitist group of teams. Part of me wants Boro and newcastle to come back up. they are big clubs with history and a great support base. however, part of me wants to see even more new teams make the jump to the top and try their hand.
i’m even more excited at the possibility of the top 4 being opened up this season. Arsenal and liverpool have lost some good players without finding quality replacements (Arbeloa, Alonso… Adebayor, Toure) and think they’ll find it a struggle even with the squads they have i think there may be a chance for Man City, Aston Villa and Everton to make their mark and upset the standings.
I’ve got a feeling this is going to be one of the most exciting times of modern football.

What a weird week in the world of football!
Well,
It most certainly has been a strange week in the world of football! here are my top picks (in no particular order):
1. Sven becoming director at Notts County: They must have some serious cash going on there to get Sven to join. I am pretty sure that he’ll enjoy this new challenge though , especially as his focus is on youth team development, good luck to him.
2. Liverpool interested in Peter Crouch: It just goes to show that Benitez has caught the Harry Redknapp bug of buying back players! I remember Daddy long legs playing alongside James ‘mirror muscle syndrome’ Beattie at Southampton. i didn’t rate him then and i don’t particularly rate him now – first touch is terrible, and no matter where he may be on the pitch he always passes backwards. If I were 6’7″ i’d be expected to get everyball that came my way. Stay away Rafa!
3.Bangor become billionaires: they’ve been overtaken by a billionaire because he went to university there. Only problem is, the Welsh league aint necessarily the most hotly contended in the world so i doubt there’ll be much improvement in the short term. you never know though, it may raise the profile and that can only be a good thing.
4.I would like to know where City’s defence will come from next season. starting to get worried by the time it is taking to buy a defender or 2. And surely we could find a better deal than £40m for JT. We’re not a complete team as of et but i’m sure we will have sorted ourselves out soon (fingers crossed)
5. West Ham problems?: Just read this week that the clubs new owners may already be looking to sell the club “if the price is right”. If this is true i certainly wouldn’t want my club being run by people who are purely in it to make a quick buck. will they be willing to spend money on bringing in players and do they have the clubs interest at heart or are they playing monopoly for real? Sam, what do you think? – i hope for your sake they either sell up quick to a person who is actually interested in the clubs history and future, or that the newspapers have fabricated this story.
6. Finally, i want to just pass on my good wishes to John Hartson and his family at this extremely challenging time – to be told within a week you have cancer that has spread to your brain and lungs must be unbearable news and especially at 34 years old. my thoughts are with his family.

The Eto’o Saga
Well, my wish has come true. Man City have ended their pursuit of Eto’o and to tell you the truth, I’m pretty pleased.
I don’t see it as a sign of weakness that City can’t attract the big name players. It’s true, we don’t have as much on offer as other clubs in the premier league, but what we do have is a vision that will see us become a more competitive club. I sure hope that recent signings like Barry, Santa Cruz have joined us because of that vision and not due to their big wages, which in fairness, they wouldn’t get elsewhere.
Surely a professional footballer won’t go to a club because they’ll get paid better – they weren’t being payed too badly at their previous clubs! I’d like to think that they were impressed with the direction of the owners (we can only speculate what they were told)
Eto’o is a world class player, there’s no doubting that, but i do believe that his heart was not set on City. I admired Kaka when he said he did not feel it was right to join. He was not swayed by money, but by his heart. that’s the sort of player i want in the team; a player whose heart is set on what is right. If that is City, then great – let him play his socks off for the fans and for the club; If not, then nevermind.
People who mock us because of our ‘failure’ to sign that one big name, please respect us for believing that we will be a club that will succeed and become one of the biggest teams in European football, and not just be content with survival in the premier league.

The transfer roundabout

Eto’o is definitely comin…….Eto’o isn’t……..What on earth is happening!?
I really hope he doesn’t sign for City. Why on earth should we pay £25m for a 28 year old with one year left on his contract and offer to pay him £200,000 per week (after tax: that makes it close to £400,000 per week!)?
It is slightly crazy. i know the owners want to prove that they’re serious about building a trophy winning side but come on!
for £25m we could buy 3 or 4 talented youngsters who will be fighting for a first team place in a season or two.
Plus, how many strikers does one team need? We’ve got Robinho, Bellamy, Jo, Bojinov, Santa Cruz, Caicedo, Benjani and probably Tevez, not to forget Ched Evans, and others who can play up front like SWP & Elano.
Let’s not focus on buying big name players who demand so much money just to pull on a blue shirt. I can’t imagine what other people are thinking when I (a city fan of course) is on the verge of cringing because we are being held mto ransom.
we are giving in when players say: “I’ll only move if you givew me loads of money”. Yes, City aren’t the most attractive prospect for top players, so lets go for those who see the vision and want to be part of something exciting in the future.

The Man City Rollercoaster
Exciting times it’s been in the history of the Citizens. Are we finally going back to the big time? (fair enough – our ‘big time’ wasn’t too big at all!)
As a City fan, i’m usually quite accepting of the ups and downs the team and fans have gone through. i don’t expect the stability that United hav eenjoyed, yet neither do i anticipate the downfall like that of Southampton. That was clearly noticable when City went down to Division 2 (old division 3) and average attendence stayed the same (35,000)!
Now it seems the rollercoaster that is City may be coming to a halt, no more peaks followed by troughs – are we really going to be serious contenders for a champions league place, and challenging for the Premiership crown? Had you asked me that a year ago when we suddenly became the richest club in the world i probably would’ve laughed: “Chances are, Oil will dry up and we’ll be stuck with penniless owners!”
yet a year later i am more optimistic. The owners seem to have the clubs interests at heart, they are listening to the Manager (even supporting him!) and still maintaining trust in the academy. maybe future glories aren’t far off. I’m realistic to say that there’s not much chance of that happening next season, but who knows, we may suprise a few people.
I like where the club is going, but i don’t want to see us forgetting the lads who have kept us going; not big name players, just a bunch of kids who have played out of love for the game. it’s great to see big names being linked to our club, but i’ll be very happy at the end of the day if names like Joe Hart, Ched Evans and Stephen Ireland continue to make it onto the pitch.
I truly hope that we will now start to rise up and take our place among the top, the fans deserve it. Just hope we don’t end up like Newcastle with a huge wage bill and an awful yellow kit!
